Overview of travel opportunities

Participants must make their own travel arrangements for attending the Summer School. Saarbrücken is centrally located in Europe and has excellent transport connections. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions about planning your arrival at the Summer School.

Via Saarbrücken Airport

Saarbrücken Airport is located just east of Saarbrücken. It has regular flight connections to Hamburg (HAM) and Berlin-Tegel (TXL) from where you access to international destinations.
The airport is easily accessible from the city of Saarbrücken. A taxi to the city centre will cost approximately 35 € and takes around 20 minutes. A regional bus (bus route 10) will take you to the city centre in around 30 minutes and costs 2,60 €.

Via Paris and Luxembourg

If your flight takes you to Paris Charles-de-Gaulle Airport (CDG) or to Paris Orly Airport (ORY), you will need 30-60 minutes to get from the airport to the train station "Gare de l’Est" from where the high-speed train (TGV/ICE) takes you to Saarbrücken central station in about 1:50 hrs. Train tickets for the TGV must be booked in advance and cost around 80 €. Your train connection from "Gare de l’Est" train station to Saarbrücken central station can be booked via the website of Deutsche Bahn which is available at bahn.de (German, English and French versions available).

It is also possible to fly to Luxemburg Airport (LUX), from where you can also get to the centre of Saarbrücken easily by bus. The bus transfer takes around 1:20 hrs. (See information about  Luxembourg Airport below).

Via Frankfurt Airport

Participants arriving at Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) can travel to Saarbrücken central station via a direct train connection by regional train (approx. 2:35 hrs., around. 40 €) or via a high speed train connection (approx. 2:08 hrs., around. 50 €) which would need a train change at Mannheim central station.

Via other nearby airports (Luxembourg; Metz)

Luxembourg Airport (LUX) has regular flight connections to numerous International Airports, for example: Paris Charles-de-Gaulle (CDG), Frankfurt Airport (FRA), London Heathrow (LHR) and London City (LCY), Birmingham (BHX), Düsseldorf International Airport (DUS), Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS), and Zürich Airport (ZRH).

Travelling in Saarbrücken
